Athletics is a dynamic sport that thrives on the contributions of individuals from various roles, including athletes, coaches, administrators, and officials. As an official, you'll play a vital role in helping athletes perform at their best and achieve their dreams.
Officiating at athletics competitions (at the club, Centre, and national levels) is both flexible and enjoyable. You can choose to attend as many or as few events as your schedule allows. We especially encourage young people to get involved and discover the excitement of the sport. This is a wonderful opportunity to give back to your community.
Level 1 courses
Our Level 1 course is a great way to take your first step in becoming an official, by learning about Athletics from the official's point of view, what you're looking for and how to assist athletes in an encouraging and collaborative environment.
This course will include:
- Safeguarding
- An introduction to track and field
- A walk around the track to discuss the various markings and events
- Open book assessment

Athletics Season is just around the corner. This year we are making a few changes to the Junior programme to improve the club experience for members.
Children between the ages of 7 to 12 can register for Junior Athletics.
Sessions will be based on a Run, Jump, Throw programme utilising fundamental movement skills.
Junior Athletics will run on Tuesday evenings 5.15 - 6.15 at Cooks Gardens. This will be for athletes aged 7-12.
Older athletes (10 and above) can also come along to club nights on Tuesday night at Cooks Gardens from 6.30pm. Club nights are a chance for these older athletes to get some technical support along with a chance to race in some of the junior events hosted on the night.
Programmes for both the Junior and Senior club will be posted each week on our Athletics Whanganui website.
If you want to be part of the club this year then you can register online using the following link available on this page when it comes live.
Parents, volunteers and coaches are encouraged to register with the club so that you can receive direct communication about events and programmes available throughout the year.
